alder barred the owl with friends

It's the last day of the first month of 2025 and a good day to let you all know, we have finished our first toy design of the year! We've seen owls in our yard on these quiet snowy days. They feel magical to me. They're soft, calm, and focused, and those qualities feel needed in 2025.

We've had some time to think about this transition for our business and wanted to start by telling you a little how we plan to release new designs on our new website. Our toys will be made in small batches released throughout the year. We are working with limited quantities of all natural materials. These are often deadstock or hand dyed fabrics and as a result our toys are not over produced. This style of slow heirloom production will allow us to create unique collectable objects. Our shelves here will be constantly changing.

This first owl, Alder Barred, took some trial and error to get right. Drafting these patterns is my favorite part of being a toymaker.

When designing Alder we aimed for something that unmistakably represented an owl while keeping the overall silhouette simple. Our hope was that this would allow the materials and varieties of textures to shine, and the owl's personality would vary with each child's imagination. Alder is soft and firm--a perfect snuggling companion but also stands upright and looks lovely posing on a shelf when waiting to be played with.

Here's Alder, launched just this morning:alder the owl

Alder Barred is an 8" tall owl made of all natural materials. This elegant and minimal plush owl reminds us of the owl that sat outside our kitchen window perched on a rhododendron to have breakfast with us one morning. Alder is made with our classic teddy bear cotton fabric, a cotton flannel fabric for the belly, green velvet for the beak, and a golden yellow mohair for the collar. The body is stuffed with 100% wool ethically sourced from US farms. The face is shaved to give it its unique texture and then hand embroidered.

Some recommendations for the new year:

1. I like to spend time dreaming of starting our garden on these cold snowy days. I recently have become fixated on learning how to dye with indigo and I learned you can grow Japanese indigo here. Hudson Valley Seed Co has lots of wonderful heirloom seeds.

2. I wasn't doing dry January but I do love making a mocktail occasionally and found this recipe on reddit for a margarita inspired mocktail:
- 1 Lime
- 1/2 oz agave syrup
- 1/2 oz orange juice
- 3 oz fevertree tonic water
- orange bitters

3. Alison Roman's Pantry Pasta recipe (or maybe guide is a better word) will inspire you to make some really really good comfort food for cold nights where you didn't make it to the grocery store.
