Reworking the pattern for this abandoned prototype: To make a spring chick
Last week in yet another endless web search for some all natural faux fur/ teddy bear fabric I found this! It’s 100% cotton and the softest fabric. I bought it all and contacted the store owner to help me track down some more for the future.

I started imagining what design this small amount of fabric I had in my studio (so far) would work best for. My first thought was an animal laying down inspired by this antique Steiff dog I bought over the summer at the Brimfield Antique fair.

I also considered one of our floppy bears. Wouldn’t these be lovely if they had long fur in contrast with their suits?

Then I considered a more structured toy—like our bunnies but wasn’t sure the drape of this fabric would work with this particular pattern.

So I moved on to sketching another structured toy I wanted to design for this Spring: a chick!

And then I remembered this prototype for an owl from last year. This was the third attempt and it never felt quite right so I put it on the back burner.

But I concluded that the pattern would be a great starting point with some changes.

And I got to work on the living room floor because that’s where I’m finding I need to spend a lot of time while caring for a baby.
